I am getting older, and thankfully, you are getting older, too.  As the body matures and changes, our nutritional needs change, also. When we are born, the emphasis is on growing strong bones and blood cells and nerve endings and all the other parts of the body. Enjoying and ingesting good, healthy, nutrient-rich food is one of the best ways to develop strong bones, healthy tissues and working body systems.

As we advance to our later years, we still need the nutrient-rich foods to maintain our bodies so we can live full lives and enjoy our time, talents and treasures.

Vegetables of all kinds contain vitamins and minerals are an important piece in keeping our bodies healthy. Vitamins have different jobs–helping you resist infections, keeping your nerves healthy, and helping your body get energy from food or your blood to clot properly. By following the Dietary Guidelines, you will get enough of most of these vitamins from food.

Specifically, Vitamin A is important for our older bodies. Vitamin A is found in dark, green veggies like broccoli, salad greens and cooked greens. It is also found in carrots and sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes aren’t just for Thanksgiving, anymore!
